CoolSculpting, known clinically as cryolipolysis, is an FDA-cleared non-surgical body contouring treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat cells without surgery, needles, or downtime. Since its introduction in 2010, over 14 million treatments have been performed worldwide, making it one of the most extensively studied non-invasive fat reduction technologies available.
The Science of Cryolipolysis
The technology behind CoolSculpting was developed at Harvard Medical School after researchers observed that fat cells are more susceptible to cold temperatures than surrounding tissues, a principle known as selective cryolipolysis. During treatment, a specialised applicator draws the targeted tissue between two cooling panels, lowering the temperature of subcutaneous fat to between minus 11 and plus 5 degrees Celsius.
At these temperatures, fat cells undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death) while skin, muscle, and nerve tissue remain unharmed. Over the following 8 to 12 weeks, the body’s lymphatic system naturally processes and eliminates the damaged fat cells. Crucially, once these cells are eliminated, they do not regenerate, the reduction is permanent provided the patient maintains a stable weight.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
- Abdomen: Both upper and lower abdominal fat pads
- Flanks: Commonly known as love handles
- Inner and outer thighs: Including the banana roll beneath the buttocks
- Upper arms: Bingo wings and posterior arm fat
- Submental area: Double chin reduction using a specialised CoolMini applicator
- Bra fat and back fat: Lateral and posterior torso
What to Expect During Treatment
Each treatment cycle lasts 35 to 60 minutes per applicator depending on the area and generation of device used. The latest CoolSculpting Elite system features dual applicators, allowing two areas to be treated simultaneously and reducing overall session time. During the first few minutes, patients feel intense cold and a pulling sensation, which subsides as the area numbs.
Most patients read, work on a laptop, or simply relax during their session. No anaesthesia is required, and patients can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.
Results and Expectations
Clinical trials published in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy have demonstrated an average fat layer reduction of 20 to 25% per treatment cycle. Results begin to become visible at approximately 4 weeks, with the most dramatic changes typically observed between 8 and 12 weeks post-treatment. Many patients achieve their desired outcome with one to two sessions per area, though this varies based on individual anatomy and goals.
It is important to understand that CoolSculpting is not a weight loss solution. It is designed for patients who are close to their ideal body weight but have localised fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. The ideal candidate has a BMI of 30 or below and realistic expectations about the degree of improvement achievable.
Safety Profile
CoolSculpting has been the subject of over 100 peer-reviewed publications. Common temporary side effects include redness, swelling, bruising, tingling, and numbness in the treated area, typically resolving within one to three weeks. Serious complications are exceptionally rare.
At Axiom Aesthetics, we perform a thorough body assessment and use clinical measurements to track your progress objectively. Our practitioners will provide an honest evaluation of whether CoolSculpting is likely to deliver meaningful results for your specific concerns, or whether an alternative approach may be more appropriate.
