Overview

Thigh lift removes excess skin and fat from the inner or outer thigh, most often after substantial weight loss. As with an arm lift, it addresses skin laxity rather than fat volume alone.

What is involved

  • Anaesthetic: general anaesthetic.
  • Duration: commonly 2 to 3 hours.
  • Stay: usually one night.

Recovery

Compression garments are worn for several weeks and walking is encouraged early to reduce clot risk. Most people take 3 to 4 weeks off work and avoid strenuous exercise for around 6 weeks. Sitting can be uncomfortable for a period.

Risks and limitations

Scarring is extensive and permanent, running in the groin crease and often down the inner thigh. The inner thigh is a demanding area to heal: wound breakdown, delayed healing and scar migration or widening are all recognised, partly because of movement and moisture in the area.

Other risks include seroma, lymphoedema, numbness, infection, asymmetry, and distortion of the labia or groin contour if tension is misjudged. Weight should be stable before surgery.
