Scalp Micropigmentation

Overview

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic tattooing technique in which pigment is deposited in the scalp as tiny dots that mimic the appearance of closely shaved hair follicles. It does not treat hair loss; it creates the visual impression of density or of a shaved head.

What it is used for

Creating the look of a closely cropped hairstyle in extensive baldness, adding the appearance of density between existing hairs in diffuse thinning, and camouflaging scars including the linear donor scar from a strip hair transplant.

What is involved

  • Sessions: typically two to four sessions spaced one to two weeks apart to build density and refine colour.
  • Session time: commonly 2 to 4 hours.
  • Healing: redness for a few days; the scalp should be kept dry initially, with no swimming, sweating or sun exposure for around a week.

Risks and limitations

This is a tattoo, and the practical risks are those of tattooing: infection, allergic reaction to pigment, and unsatisfactory or uneven results. The most common long-term issues are fading and colour change — pigment can shift towards blue or green as it degrades — and a mismatch as natural hair greys around unchanging pigment. Top-ups are generally needed every few years.

Correction is difficult. Removing or lightening unwanted SMP requires laser treatment across the scalp, which is uncomfortable, incomplete and sometimes causes further problems. Choosing the practitioner carefully matters more here than in most cosmetic procedures, because the result is semi-permanent and highly visible.

It does not stop hair loss. Where thinning continues, the pigmented pattern can become mismatched with remaining hair over time.
