Otoplasty reshapes prominent ears by reforming the cartilage and, where needed, setting the ear closer to the head. It is one of the few aesthetic operations commonly performed in childhood, usually from around five or six years of age once the ear has reached most of its adult size.
A head bandage is worn for about a week, often followed by a headband at night for several weeks. Most adults take one to two weeks off work, and children usually need one to two weeks off school and several weeks away from contact sport and swimming.
Recognised risks include asymmetry between the two ears, recurrence of prominence as the cartilage attempts to return to its original shape, a visible scar behind the ear, numbness, and rarely infection of the cartilage, which is a significant complication requiring prompt treatment.
Surgery in children is generally guided by the child’s own wish to have it, not solely the parents’. Any bleeding disorder or tendency to keloid scarring needs discussion beforehand.
