Microneedling with PRP

Overview

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin with fine needles to provoke a wound-healing response and collagen production. When combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a small volume of the patient’s own blood is centrifuged to concentrate platelets, and the resulting plasma is applied to or injected into the treated skin.

How it works

The needling itself is the active part: injury at a controlled depth triggers remodelling over subsequent weeks. PRP contains growth factors and is intended to enhance that healing response. Evidence for microneedling in acne scarring is reasonably established; evidence for the additional benefit of PRP is less consistent and study quality varies.

What is involved

  • Course: typically three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart.
  • Treatment time: around 45 to 60 minutes including blood draw and preparation.
  • Anaesthetic: topical anaesthetic cream.

Recovery

Redness resembling sunburn for one to three days is usual, with some pinpoint bleeding during treatment and mild flaking afterwards. Makeup is generally avoided for 24 hours.

Risks and limitations

The British Association of Dermatologists notes that microneedling may result in pain, swelling, infection and scarring, including keloid formation. Post-inflammatory pigmentation is a particular consideration in darker skin types. Because PRP involves handling blood, sterile technique and correct storage are essential.

Results are gradual and cumulative rather than immediate, and microneedling does not treat deep ice-pick scarring or significant skin laxity.
