Fat Dissolving Injections

Overview

Injectable fat reduction, commonly called fat dissolving injections, uses a solution intended to disrupt fat cell membranes in a small, localised pocket of fat, such as beneath the chin. The body then clears the released contents.

Regulatory position in the UK — read this first

This is the area of non-surgical practice with the most significant regulatory complexity. Deoxycholic acid is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, licensed only for fat beneath the chin; use elsewhere on the body is outside the licence. Many other products marketed for fat dissolving hold no UK marketing authorisation at all and are unlicensed medicines. Suspected adverse reactions can and should be reported to the MHRA through the Yellow Card scheme.

Anyone considering this treatment should ask specifically which product is proposed, whether it is licensed in the UK, whether the intended use is within that licence, and who is prescribing it.

What is involved

  • Course: more than one session is usually required, spaced several weeks apart.
  • Recovery: marked swelling is expected and can last one to two weeks, sometimes longer, and is often more pronounced than people anticipate.

Risks and limitations

Recognised risks include pain, prolonged swelling and bruising, hard lumps, skin necrosis, nerve injury (including weakness of the lower lip where the marginal mandibular nerve is affected), and infection. Results are not always symmetrical.

The treatment addresses small, discrete pockets of fat. It is not a weight-loss treatment, and it does not tighten the skin that remains once fat is reduced, which matters where skin quality is already poor.
