Overview
EMSculpt NEO is a brand of body-contouring device that combines high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy, which causes involuntary muscle contractions, with radiofrequency heating of the overlying fat layer.
What is involved
- Course: typically four sessions over two weeks, then maintenance.
- Treatment time: around 30 minutes per area.
- Downtime: none, though muscle soreness similar to after exercise is common.
What it can and cannot do
The intended effects are a modest increase in muscle thickness and a modest reduction in the fat layer over it. Reported changes in manufacturer-sponsored studies are measurable but small, and independent long-term evidence is limited. Results depend on maintaining them; muscle adaptation reverses without continued stimulus, as it does with any training effect.
It is not a weight-loss treatment and it will not produce visible definition where a substantial fat layer remains. It works best as an adjunct for people already close to their target composition.
Risks and limitations
Generally well tolerated. Muscle ache, transient redness and warmth are usual. It is contraindicated with metal implants, pacemakers and other implanted electronic devices in the treatment field, during pregnancy, and over recent surgical sites. Anyone with a hernia in the treatment area should be assessed first, as strong involuntary contraction is not advisable.

Day 1: Immediately After
Mild redness and swelling at the treatment area is normal. Apply cool compresses as advised by your practitioner. Avoid touching the treated area.

Days 2-3: Initial Healing
Swelling begins to subside. You may experience mild bruising which can be concealed with makeup. Resume normal daily activities with care.
W1
Week 1: Visible Improvement
Initial results become visible. Any bruising should have resolved. Follow-up check with your practitioner to assess progress and address any concerns.
W4
Week 4: Full Results
Treatment has fully settled with optimal results now visible. Final review appointment to evaluate outcome and discuss maintenance programme.
