Breast Uplift (Mastopexy)
Overview
Mastopexy raises and reshapes the breast by removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple. It addresses sagging (ptosis) without substantially changing volume. Where volume has also been lost, it is sometimes combined with an implant.
What is involved
- Anaesthetic: general anaesthetic.
- Duration: commonly 2 to 3 hours.
- Stay: same day or one night.
Recovery
A support bra is worn continuously for several weeks. Two to three weeks off work is typical, with heavy lifting and strenuous exercise avoided for around six weeks. Final shape settles over several months.
Risks and limitations
As with breast reduction, scarring is permanent, and its extent depends on how much lift is required. Recognised risks include altered nipple sensation, asymmetry, wound healing problems, and recurrence of sagging over time, since surgery does not stop the ongoing effects of gravity, ageing and skin laxity.
An uplift alone does not increase breast size, and can make the breast look slightly smaller by redistributing existing tissue.
Who it may not suit
Results are best assessed once weight is stable. Pregnancy and breastfeeding after mastopexy can undo the result. Smoking significantly increases the risk of poor wound healing and nipple complications.

Recovery Timeline

Day 1: Immediately After
Mild redness and swelling at the treatment area is normal. Apply cool compresses as advised by your practitioner. Avoid touching the treated area.

Days 2-3: Initial Healing
Swelling begins to subside. You may experience mild bruising which can be concealed with makeup. Resume normal daily activities with care.
W1
Week 1: Visible Improvement
Initial results become visible. Any bruising should have resolved. Follow-up check with your practitioner to assess progress and address any concerns.
W4
Week 4: Full Results
Treatment has fully settled with optimal results now visible. Final review appointment to evaluate outcome and discuss maintenance programme.
