Overview

Body contouring is an umbrella term rather than a single procedure. It covers surgical options such as liposuction and excisional lifts, and non-surgical options such as cryolipolysis, radiofrequency, focused ultrasound and muscle stimulation devices.

Choosing between approaches

The decision usually turns on one question: is the problem fat, loose skin, or both?

  • Fat with good skin quality: liposuction or a non-surgical fat-reduction treatment may be appropriate.
  • Loose skin: only excisional surgery removes it. No energy device or injectable achieves the same result, and treating the fat alone can make loose skin look worse.
  • Both: a staged or combined surgical plan is usually needed.

Non-surgical options have less downtime and lower risk, but correspondingly smaller and slower results, and they generally require maintenance. Surgical options achieve more in one step but carry anaesthetic risk, permanent scars and a real recovery period.

Common ground

None of these treatments is a substitute for weight loss, and all of them work best when weight has been stable for several months. Results are affected by subsequent weight change in every case.

Risks

Risks are those of whichever procedure is chosen, and are set out on the individual treatment pages. Where several treatments are combined or staged closely, the risks are additive.
