If you could only use one anti-ageing product for the rest of your life, every dermatologist would tell you the same thing: sunscreen. UV radiation is responsible for approximately 80% of visible facial ageing, making daily sun protection the single most impactful skincare habit you can adopt.

UV Radiation and Skin Ageing

UVA Rays (Ageing Rays)

UVA radiation penetrates deep into the dermis, damaging collagen and elastin fibres, generating free radicals, and triggering pigmentation changes. UVA is present year-round, penetrates clouds and windows, and its intensity barely varies by season.

UVB Rays (Burning Rays)

UVB primarily affects the epidermis, causing sunburn and DNA damage. It is strongest between 11am and 3pm and is the primary driver of skin cancer development.

Choosing the Right Sunscreen

SPF Rating

SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks 98%. The difference seems small but is significant over a lifetime. We recommend SPF 50 for daily use.

Broad Spectrum

Ensure your sunscreen is labelled “broad spectrum” — this means it protects against both UVA and UVB. In the UK, look for the UVA star rating (4–5 stars ideal).

Chemical vs Mineral

  • Chemical sunscreens: Absorb UV rays (avobenzone, octocrylene) — lightweight, cosmetically elegant
  • Mineral sunscreens: Reflect UV rays (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) — better for sensitive/reactive skin

Application Tips

  • Apply 1/4 teaspoon for the face alone
  • Reapply every 2 hours during sun exposure
  • Apply as the final step in your morning skincare routine
  • Do not skip on cloudy days — 80% of UV penetrates clouds
