The UK has one of the highest rates of melanoma in Europe, with over 16,000 new cases diagnosed annually. Early detection is crucial — melanoma caught at Stage 1 has a 99% five-year survival rate, compared to just 27% at Stage 4. Regular mole checks save lives.

The ABCDE Rule

Use this simple guide to monitor your moles:

  • A — Asymmetry: One half differs from the other
  • B — Border: Irregular, ragged, or blurred edges
  • C — Colour: Multiple colours or uneven pigmentation
  • D — Diameter: Larger than 6mm (pencil eraser size)
  • E — Evolving: Any change in size, shape, colour, or feel

Professional Mole Screening

At Axiom Aesthetics, our trained practitioners offer comprehensive mole screening using dermoscopy — a non-invasive technique using a specialised magnifying device to examine mole structures invisible to the naked eye. Suspicious moles are promptly referred to dermatology specialists.

Risk Factors

  • Fair skin that burns easily
  • History of sunburn, especially in childhood
  • Large number of moles (50+)
  • Family history of melanoma
  • Use of sunbeds (any amount increases risk)
  • Weakened immune system

Prevention

Daily SPF 50, avoiding peak UV hours (11am–3pm), wearing protective clothing, never using sunbeds, and regular self-examination are your best defences.
