The success of any aesthetic treatment depends not only on the skill of the practitioner and the quality of the products used, but also on how well you care for your skin in the days and weeks following your procedure. Proper aftercare can significantly enhance your results, speed up recovery, and minimise the risk of complications. Whether you have had injectables, a chemical peel, laser treatment, or microneedling, these universal aftercare principles will help you achieve the best possible outcome.

Immediate Post-Treatment Care (First 24 Hours)

The first 24 hours after any aesthetic procedure are critical. During this period, your skin is at its most vulnerable, and how you treat it can influence the quality of your results. General guidelines for the immediate post-treatment period include:

  • Avoid touching the treated area: Your hands carry bacteria, and touching can introduce infection or displace products like dermal fillers
  • Skip makeup: Allow the skin to breathe and heal without the burden of cosmetic products, especially after procedures that break the skin’s surface
  • Avoid strenuous exercise: Increased blood flow and sweating can exacerbate swelling, bruising, and inflammation
  • Do not consume alcohol: Alcohol thins the blood and can worsen bruising and swelling
  • Apply cold compresses gently: A clean, cold compress (not ice directly on the skin) can help reduce swelling, particularly after injectable treatments

Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable

Regardless of the treatment you have had, protecting your skin from ultraviolet radiation is arguably the single most important aftercare step. Post-treatment skin is more susceptible to sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and delayed healing. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen every morning, and reapply every two hours if you are spending time outdoors. Wear a wide-brimmed hat when possible. This advice applies year-round — even on overcast days, significant UV radiation reaches the skin. For treatments such as chemical peels and laser resurfacing, strict sun avoidance for at least two weeks is essential.

Hydration and Gentle Skincare

Keeping the skin well hydrated supports the healing process and enhances results. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser suited to your skin type. Avoid active ingredients — such as retinoids, vitamin C serums, AHAs, and BHAs — for at least 48 to 72 hours after most treatments, as they can irritate sensitised skin. Switch to a mild, non-foaming cleanser during the recovery period. Your practitioner may recommend specific post-treatment products; follow their advice, as these are selected to support optimal healing.

Managing Swelling and Bruising

Some degree of swelling and bruising is normal after injectable treatments, microneedling, and certain laser procedures. To minimise these effects:

  1. Sleep with your head elevated on an extra pillow for the first one to two nights
  2. Apply arnica cream or take arnica tablets (starting before treatment if possible) to support bruise healing
  3. Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) for 48 hours post-treatment — but only discontinue prescribed medications with your doctor’s approval
  4. Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  5. Avoid extreme heat — saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, and hot yoga — for 48 to 72 hours, as heat exacerbates swelling

Treatment-Specific Aftercare

Whilst the above advice is universal, certain treatments have additional specific requirements:

  • After anti-wrinkle injections: Remain upright for four hours. Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area. Do not lie face-down. Exercise facial muscles gently (frowning, raising eyebrows) to help the product settle.
  • After dermal fillers: Avoid dental procedures for two weeks. Do not apply pressure to the treated area. Report any unusual pain, blanching, or visual disturbances to your practitioner immediately, as these could indicate a vascular complication.
  • After chemical peels: Do not pick, peel, or scratch flaking skin. Let it shed naturally. Use only the products recommended by your practitioner. Expect increased sensitivity for one to two weeks.
  • After microneedling: Avoid makeup for 24 hours. Use only mineral-based sunscreen initially. Apply recommended hydrating serums to maximise absorption through the micro-channels.

When to Contact Your Practitioner

Most post-treatment symptoms — mild swelling, redness, bruising, and tenderness — are entirely normal and resolve within days. However, you should contact your practitioner promptly if you experience severe or increasing pain, signs of infection (unusual redness, warmth, pus, or fever), skin blanching or discolouration around a filler injection site, visual disturbances after facial filler treatment, or any symptom that feels abnormal or concerning. A reputable practitioner will always provide clear aftercare instructions and be available for post-treatment queries. Never hesitate to reach out — it is always better to ask and be reassured than to ignore a potential complication.
