Hair loss affects approximately 6.5 million men and 8 million women in the UK, making it one of the most common aesthetic concerns we address at Axiom Aesthetics. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy has emerged as a promising non-surgical option — but does the science support the claims?

What Is PRP Hair Therapy?

PRP involves drawing a small sample of your own blood, processing it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and injecting this platelet-rich plasma into the scalp. Platelets contain growth factors — including PDGF, VEGF, EGF, and TGF-β — that stimulate hair follicle activity and promote new hair growth.

The Process

  1. A small blood sample (20–60ml) is drawn from your arm
  2. The blood is centrifuged to separate and concentrate platelets
  3. The PRP is activated and loaded into syringes
  4. Using fine needles, PRP is injected across the affected scalp areas
  5. The entire procedure takes approximately 45–60 minutes

What Does the Evidence Say?

The scientific evidence for PRP in hair restoration has strengthened considerably:

  • A 2024 meta-analysis of 28 clinical trials found a statistically significant increase in hair density and thickness following PRP treatment
  • Studies report average increases of 30–40% in hair count per square centimetre after a treatment course
  • Improvement in hair shaft diameter (thicker, healthier-looking hair) has been consistently demonstrated
  • PRP appears most effective for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) in both men and women

Who Benefits Most?

PRP works best for patients with recent hair thinning (within the last 5 years), those with miniaturised but still-living follicles, patients seeking to complement hair transplant surgery, and women with diffuse pattern hair loss.

Treatment Protocol

We typically recommend an initial course of 3–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every 4–6 months. Most patients begin noticing improvement after 2–3 months, with optimal results at 6–12 months.

What PRP Cannot Do

PRP cannot regrow hair where follicles have been permanently lost (slick bald areas). It is most effective where follicles are still present but miniaturised. Setting realistic expectations is crucial for satisfaction.

Combining PRP with Other Treatments

At Axiom Aesthetics, we often combine PRP with microneedling of the scalp (to enhance growth factor absorption), prescription medications (minoxidil, finasteride), and nutritional optimisation for best results.
