I never thought I would be the type of person to write about something like this. I am a 38-year-old project manager, a weekend footballer, and — until recently — a man who had spent the better part of a decade watching his hairline retreat in the bathroom mirror every morning. Hair loss is something men are expected to just accept, to laugh off with jokes about going full Bruce Willis. But the truth is, it affected me far more than I ever admitted to anyone, including myself.
The Tipping Point
My hair loss started in my late twenties with the classic pattern: temples receding, crown thinning. By 35, I was a solid Norwood 4 on the hair loss scale. I tried everything short of surgery — minoxidil twice daily for three years, finasteride for two, laser caps, thickening shampoos, even scalp micropigmentation briefly. Some slowed the loss, but nothing restored what was already gone. The tipping point came at my daughter’s birthday party when I saw photos of myself from above and barely recognised the man with the thinning patch looking back at me.
The Consultation
I booked a consultation at Axiom Aesthetics after researching FUE hair transplants for months. What impressed me immediately was how thorough and unhurried the process was. My surgeon, Mr David Okonkwo, spent over an hour examining my scalp, assessing my donor area density, discussing my expectations, and — crucially — being honest about what was realistically achievable.
He explained that my donor area at the back and sides had excellent density, making me a strong candidate for FUE. We agreed on a plan to restore my hairline to a natural, age-appropriate position and add density to the crown — approximately 3,200 grafts in total, to be completed in a single session.
Procedure Day
The procedure took about eight hours. I will not sugarcoat it — it is a long day. But the team made it as comfortable as possible. After local anaesthesia was administered (the only genuinely uncomfortable part, lasting about fifteen minutes), I felt virtually nothing. I watched films on a tablet, chatted with the nurses, and even dozed off at one point during the extraction phase.
The FUE technique involves extracting individual follicular units from the donor area using a precision punch tool less than 1mm in diameter. These grafts are then carefully implanted into recipient sites created at precise angles and densities to mimic natural hair growth patterns. The artistry involved is genuinely remarkable — Mr Okonkwo spent considerable time designing my new hairline, ensuring it looked natural rather than the obvious “pluggy” results you sometimes see.
Recovery Timeline
Week 1: The Scabby Phase
My scalp was covered in tiny scabs at each graft site. There was mild swelling around my forehead for days 3–5 (I took the week off work). Sleeping propped up at 45 degrees on a travel pillow was essential. Pain was minimal — standard paracetamol was sufficient.
Weeks 2–4: The Shedding Phase
This is the part no one warns you about adequately. The transplanted hairs fell out. Almost all of them. I knew intellectually this was normal — it is the follicles that matter, not the initial hair shafts — but emotionally, watching the hairs you just paid for fall out is challenging. Mr Okonkwo’s team were excellent at reassuring me this was completely expected.
Months 2–4: The Ugly Duckling Phase
Not much visible happening. This requires patience. The follicles are establishing themselves beneath the surface, building blood supply and preparing for new growth.
Months 5–8: The Growth Phase
This is when the magic starts. Fine, wispy hairs began emerging across my hairline and crown. Each week brought visible progress. By month 6, I could see a genuine hairline forming for the first time in years. The hairs were still thin and fine, but they were there, and they were growing.
Months 9–12: The Maturation Phase
The transplanted hairs thickened, darkened, and reached full length. The density filled in progressively. By my 12-month review, the transformation was complete.
The Results
At my one-year follow-up, even I was stunned. I have a full, natural-looking hairline that sits exactly where it should for a man my age. My crown has density I have not seen since my mid-twenties. The results look completely natural — my barber, who did not know about the procedure, simply commented that my hair seemed “thicker lately.” That, to me, was the ultimate compliment.
Would I do it again? Without a moment’s hesitation. The investment — both financial and in terms of the patience required during recovery — has been worth every penny and every day. If you are considering FUE and want to speak to someone who has been through it, the Axiom team can put you in touch with previous patients who are happy to share their experiences.
