Overview

Body contouring options, non-surgical alternatives to liposuction. This guide explores current evidence and clinical best practice.

Key Points

  • Clinical finding: radiofrequency tightens loose skin
  • Research shows: cryolipolysis targets stubborn fat
  • Evidence indicates: ultrasound cavitation disrupts fat cells

The question that decides everything: fat, skin, or both?

Almost every body contouring decision comes down to what is actually causing the appearance.

  • Fat, with good skin quality. Liposuction or a non-surgical fat-reduction treatment may be appropriate.
  • Loose skin. Only excisional surgery removes it. No energy device or injectable achieves the same result, and reducing the fat beneath loose skin usually makes the appearance worse rather than better.
  • Both. A staged or combined surgical plan is generally needed.

Surgical options

Liposuction removes localised fat deposits through small incisions. Abdominoplasty, arm lift and thigh lift remove skin as well as fat, and all leave permanent scars whose length is proportional to how much skin is removed. These achieve more in a single step but involve general anaesthetic, a real recovery period and the risks of surgery.

Non-surgical options

Cryolipolysis cools fat to damage it; radiofrequency and focused ultrasound heat tissue to tighten it; electromagnetic muscle stimulation aims to increase muscle thickness. All produce smaller, slower changes than surgery, usually require a course, and generally need maintenance.

What none of them do

None of these is a weight-loss treatment, and all of them work best when weight has been stable for several months. Results in every case are affected by later weight change. Where the concern is overall body weight rather than a localised deposit, contouring is the wrong tool.
